Riccardo Scarpa spent his career working in bronze, and this circular bowl shows the sculptural sensibility he was known for even applied to a functional form. A bull, rendered in a leaping, forward motion with its legs drawn up beneath it, is worked in low relief across the interior of the bowl, its surface catching light differently depending on the angle.
The bowl itself is finished in gilded bronze, the warm golden tone giving the bull a slightly different character than it would have in raw or patinated bronze, closer to something ceremonial or emblematic than purely naturalistic. The rim is left plain and unadorned, keeping the focus entirely on the animal at the center.
The piece is signed, consistent with Scarpa's practice of signing his cast bronze work, and measures 5 3/4 inches in diameter, a scale that works well as a catchall, a small decorative bowl, or simply displayed on a stand where the bull motif can be appreciated straight on.
Made and sourced in France, where Scarpa lived and worked for much of his career, this is a nice entry point into his sculptural output for anyone drawn to mid-century bronze work with an animal subject.

Who Are You Buying From?
Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
