Amber Lucite and Chrome Magnetic Floating Ashtray, Square Base - c.1970

Found in Belgium

The square base version of this design trades the rounded footprint for crisp, right angled edges, giving the whole composition a slightly more graphic, drafting table quality. The same four amber toned lucite blocks stand as individual posts around a central chrome dish, but set against a squared plinth the geometry reads even more deliberately architectural, every edge lining up with the ones around it.

The central ashtray insert lifts free thanks to its magnetic mount, a bit of mechanical play that contrasts nicely with the otherwise static, rule bound geometry of the base. It is a small detail that keeps the piece from feeling too rigid despite its strong lines.

Clear lucite makes up the substantial square base, giving the piece enough visual weight to anchor a tabletop without ever feeling heavy in hand. The combination of warm amber blocks, cool chrome, and crystal clear lucite plays out a little differently here than on the round base version, with the square footprint emphasizing the piece's more architectural, less orbital character.

A striking and precisely made object for collectors who prefer their vintage design with sharp, deliberate edges.

Collectors Notes

Swapping the round base for a square one gives this version a slightly crisper, more architectural stance, worth comparing directly against its round base sibling in our home decor collection. It also makes a fun housewarming gift for someone who already collects this category.

Who Are You Buying From?

Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
