An atmospheric mezzotint by American artist John P. Morgan (b. 1942), titled Nightbird and dating to circa 1970. Rendered in a deep, tonal palette characteristic of the mezzotint process, the composition depicts a fantastical bird-like figure with an almost anthropomorphic presence, holding a slender object across its body.

The circular image measures approximately 4 inches in diameter and is signed by the artist and numbered 11/20, from a notably small edition of just twenty impressions. The intimate scale of the image is emphasized by its generously proportioned matting and original vintage frame, giving the work a quiet, almost medallion-like quality.

A compelling example of vintage American printmaking, Nightbird sits somewhere between figuration, symbolism, and surrealism. The unusual subject matter and limited edition make it an especially interesting work for a collection of works on paper, contemporary prints, or more enigmatic figurative art.

A vintage label remains on the verso.

Collectors Notes

Small works can be particularly effective when given this much breathing room. The circular composition and oversized mat make Nightbird ideal for hanging among larger works, where its intimate scale invites a closer look. It would also be particularly good incorporated into a salon wall, library, or tucked into an unexpected narrow wall where a larger work would feel too deliberate.

It's a fitting addition to our Art and Home Decor collections.

Who Are You Buying From?

Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
