Italian Burl Walnut & Metal Ashtray - c.1980

A substantial vintage Italian ashtray dating to the 1980s, combining richly figured burl walnut with a circular metal insert. The square body is softened by rounded corners and subtly darkened accents, creating a tailored frame around the recessed metal bowl at its center. The contrast between the warmth and movement of the burl and the cool surface of the metal gives the piece much of its character.

Burl walnut became a particularly recognizable material within luxury interiors and decorative accessories of the late 20th century. Its naturally irregular grain allowed otherwise simple geometric objects to feel highly decorative without the need for additional ornamentation.
