Italian Bronze Oblong Sculptural Vide Poche - c.1960

A sculptural vintage Italian bronze catchall, or vide poche, dating to the 1960s. Cast in a warm bronze tone, the piece takes the form of an elongated shallow vessel with a gently raised, asymmetrical rim. Its smooth contours and low profile give it an almost aerodynamic quality, allowing the silhouette itself to become the primary decorative element.

The piece reflects an important characteristic of Italian mid-century design: the ability to transform an ordinary functional object into something distinctly sculptural through material and proportion alone. There is little applied decoration here. Instead, the visual interest comes from the substantial bronze construction, the gradual transition from its low edge to the raised side, and the naturally developing surface character of the metal.

Compact enough for a desk or bedside table yet sculptural enough to display independently, the catchall is especially versatile. Originally intended as a vide poche—a place to empty the contents of one's pockets—it remains perfectly suited to keys, coins, jewelry, cufflinks and other small objects. Equally compelling when left empty, it is a collectible example of understated Italian decorative design from the 1960s.
