This Hermes matchbox holder pairs with the cigarette box in the same series, sharing the same fine engine turned diagonal texture across its silver lid and the same warm gilt horse as its central motif, here shown grazing rather than in full stride. The two pieces read clearly as a matched set even sold individually.
The lid lifts away entirely rather than hinging, revealing a mesh lined sleeve designed to hold a standard box of matches, with the black leather-look exterior of the sleeve sliding smoothly in and out. A small viewing window on one side lets you check the match supply without pulling the sleeve fully out.
Dating to around 1960, this reflects the same period and design language as the cigarette box, both produced when Hermes offered a range of finely finished silver smoking accessories alongside its leather goods.
Made in France, it is a well made, functional piece of Hermes silver, equally suited to actual use at a bar or desk or displayed alongside its companion cigarette box for anyone building a small collection of Hermes silver smoking accessories.

Who Are You Buying From?
Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
