This magnifying glass pairs a substantial gold toned lens ring with a handle made from a Japanese Meiji period piece, worked with a delicate raised floral vine motif in mother of pearl and shell inlay against a pale ground. The handle predates the magnifier itself by decades, repurposed into a one of one Hermes commission rather than mass produced alongside it.
According to the piece's history, this magnifier was made for one of Hermes's important clients in the 1950s, combining the house's in house metalwork with an antique Japanese decorative object to create something genuinely unique rather than a standard catalog piece. That kind of bespoke commission was not unusual for Hermes's most valued clients during this period.
The lens itself is a proper functioning magnifier, generously sized, while the Meiji handle brings a completely different decorative language into the piece, floral and delicate where the gold surround is plain and architectural. The contrast is part of what makes the object so distinctive.
Made in France and sourced in the United States, this is a genuinely one of a kind object, both for its Hermes provenance and for the antique Japanese material at its core, and a significant find for a serious collector of either Hermes objects or Japanese decorative arts.

Who Are You Buying From?
Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
