Hermes “Cordage” Rope Bottle Coaster with Guilloché Center — France, c. 1960

Found in France

A rare Hermes “Cordage” bottle coaster from France, dating to the 1960s, featuring the house’s iconic twisted rope motif wrapped around a finely detailed guilloché center.

Rendered in silver plate, the design draws inspiration from nautical cordage and equestrian tack — two recurring themes deeply associated with Hermes during the mid-century period. The sculptural rope border creates remarkable depth and texture, while the engine-turned guilloché surface introduces a refined geometric contrast that catches the light beautifully.

Elegant in scale and unmistakably Hermes in spirit, the piece functions as both a practical bottle coaster and a highly collectible decorative object.

Collectors Notes

The Hermes Cordage line has become increasingly sought after among collectors for its understated sophistication and immediately recognizable rope detailing. Unlike overtly branded luxury objects, pieces like this rely on form, craftsmanship, and subtle references to the house's equestrian and maritime heritage.

This coaster works beautifully beneath a wine bottle, decanter, or ice bucket, but also feels equally at home styled as a desk tray or resting atop a stack of books. The guilloche center gives the piece an almost hypnotic texture that becomes especially striking in candlelight or bar settings.

A wonderful addition for collectors of Hermes home objects, French barware, and mid-century decorative silver.

It's a fitting addition to our Vintage Hermes and Barware collections, and a hypnotic Housewarming Gifts pick.

Who Are You Buying From?

Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
