A genuinely rare piece from Hagenauer's Vienna workshop, these sugar tongs are shaped as a highly stylized parrot, most likely designed by Karl Hagenauer himself. The bird's form is reduced to its most essential lines, a crested head with a long, serrated beak forming the gripping ends, and a looping tail curling back into the handle, a hallmark of the workshop's confident, modernist approach to animal subjects.
This example is well documented, appearing on Hagenauer's own official archive, which identifies the design specifically as a parrot. The piece is correctly marked on the underside of the base with the impressed "Hagenauer Wien" and "Made in Austria" stamps, details that serious collectors will want to look for when authenticating similar pieces.
Executed in brass with nickel plating, the tongs date to the 1920s or 1930s, the height of Hagenauer's most celebrated design period. Measuring 5.75 x 3 x 1", the piece has genuine sculptural presence well beyond its function, equally at home serving sugar cubes at a formal table or displayed on its own as a small work of Viennese modernist design.
A significant find for collectors of Hagenauer or Austrian design of this period, this piece rewards close study of its documented history as much as its striking form.

Who Are You Buying From?
Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
