French Shagreen Box with Wood Finial – c. 1940s

Name: French Shagreen Box with Wood Finial – c. 1940s
Brand: Collectors Gene
Price: 850.00 USD
Availability: OutOfStock

An exceptional example of mid-century French craftsmanship, this 1940s shagreen box embodies the quiet luxury and refined restraint that define the material.

Clad entirely in shagreen stingray hide prized for its distinctive, pebble-like texture the surface carries a subtle tonal variation that shifts gently in the light. The domed lid introduces a sculptural softness, crowned by a simple wooden finial that adds contrast and warmth.

Balanced in both form and proportion, the piece sits comfortably between decorative object and functional storage an object that invites touch as much as admiration.

Collectors Notes

French shagreen objects from this period remain among the most quietly coveted decorative pieces valued not only for their craftsmanship, but for the inherent rarity of the material itself.

Each surface is entirely unique, with no two patterns ever repeating in quite the same way. Boxes with sculptural lids and minimal hardware, like this example, are particularly desirable for their purity of form.

Equally at home on a desk, bedside, or dressing table, it lends itself to holding small personal objects or simply existing as a tactile, sculptural accent within a larger composition

It's a fitting addition to our Home Decor collection, and a coveted Housewarming Gifts pick.

Who Are You Buying From?

Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
