Bronze Face Sculpture Box by Scott Nelles Studio - c.1980
Part sculpture, part storage, this bronze trinket box by Michigan-based artist Scott Nelles is cast in the form of an enigmatic face. Signed and dated 1980, the piece has a richly patinated surface and smooth weighty feel. The lid is a stylized face somewhere between tribal, theatrical, and modernist while the interior offers a shallow cavity for storing rings, keys, or small tokens.
Nelles is known for his cast bronze objects that blend whimsy with craft, and this early piece is a rare example from the start of his studio career.
