Antique Victorian Silver Plate Sardine Box
A refined and architectural Antique Victorian silver plate sardine box, elevated on four paw feet and fitted with a hinged swing handle.
The square form is softened by classical detailing: fluted corner supports, repeating decorative borders, and claw feet that ground the piece with confidence. The lid is beautifully engraved with scrolling floral motifs, centered by a faceted knob that adds dimension and tactility.
Originally intended for serving sardines or delicacies at table, this form became popular in the late 19th century as seafood courses rose in prominence within formal dining rituals. Pieces like this were designed to move seamlessly from sideboard to table functional, yet decorative.
