Found in France

This oil painting depicts a jockey and his mount pausing quietly before a race, rendered on a round metal plate rather than canvas, a format that lends the surface an unusual density and sheen. The jockey sits upright in his red silks and white breeches, reins held loose, while the horse stands calm against a dark, almost velvety ground that pushes the pair forward into the light.

Attributed to the school of the 19th or early 20th century, the painting sits within a long tradition of sporting art focused on the quiet moments around a race rather than the action itself, a genre especially popular in France and England during this period. The brushwork is confident and economical, built up in thick passages on the horse's coat and jockey's silks that catch the light differently depending on the angle it's viewed from.

The painting is presented in its original carved giltwood frame with a green painted outer border, oak leaf ornament in the corners, and a wide gilt oval mount surrounding the round painted surface. The frame shows genuine age consistent with the painting itself, including a few small separations typical of a piece well over a century old.

At 8 7/8 inches in diameter, it is a striking, self-contained piece of sporting art, well suited to a study, library, or anywhere equestrian and racing subjects are collected.

Collectors Notes

Sporting art like this doesn't come through our doors often, so it's a natural companion to the horse and riding pieces in our Equestrian collection and the paintings in our Art collection.

The frame alone is worth a close look if you're interested in period giltwork, and it suits our Home Decor edit as well.

Who Are You Buying From?

Every object here has a journey before it ever reaches you. I've spent years seeking these pieces out, in back rooms of old ateliers, from families who've inherited more than they can keep, through dealers I've come to trust, in conversations with people who still work with their hands, because I've always believed the things we choose to live with should carry something true. What began as a private obsession became a devotion, one I now share with my wife and daughter, who remind me daily that the best collections are the ones built to be passed down, not simply owned. What you're holding isn't just an object. You're inheriting its story, and becoming part of its next chapter.
